A SIMPLE retweet by Ed Sheeran

In 2015, a SIMPLE retweet by Ed Sheeran knocked one documentary out of the ring.

Students from Gorey School of Art had recently filmed a documentary on Gorey Boxing Club called ‘One More Round’ as part of their documentary and film-making course. A friend of Ed Sheeran found the video online on the college’s Vimeo account and tweeted it to Ed. Ed then retweeted it, saying: ‘Great video about Gorey Boxing Club, which was set up by my grandad in ’86 :)”.

Made by GSA Photgraphy and Documentary Film students in 2015, “One More Round” is a documentary about Gorey Boxing Club. Taking an objective look at one of Ireland's top amateur boxing clubs, this film brings together archival footage and present day images to portray a true representation of this vibrant and dynamic voluntary group working to international standards in a small town in Ireland.

THIRD WHEEL OPEN SUBMISSION 2022

Image: Ella Bertilsson, THE LAUGHING WELL, sand, found objects and audio, 2019.

“Third Wheel” is an open submission for three artists to propose an idea for an exhibition at Periphery Space for July 2022. The concept is based around ideas of awkwardness within groups, especially within the visual arts, where artists either work alone or form support groups that are based on survival rather than  kinship.

We want three artists to come together and make an exhibition that is formally relational and conceptually cohesive. This should not be thought of as a group show of segregated individuals exhibiting alone within a group, but as a dialogue in the conception of the exhibition and the display of the work, together, in the gallery.

This could be an opportunity to make new work, or make contact and work with artists that you have an artistic affinity with in the development of an exhibition that is playful, experimental and outward looking in its consideration of its collaborators. We will be here to help with all the above in the realisation of the exhibition.

As artists, we like to think of Periphery Space as reflective of the processes and play that takes place in the art school that frames it. Please keep this context and ethos in mind when conceiving the exhibition with your collaborators.

What we need from you:

◾️3 images that represent each individual artist’s work

◾️300 word proposal to include exhibition concept and plan

*There will be a fee of €500 for each collaborating artist

SEND SUBMISSIONS DIRECTLY TO PERIPHERY.SPACE@GSA.IE BY 5PM MAY 1ST 2022.

Stephen Considine created the character of Bipolar Bear as a way to change attitudes towards discussing mental health issues

BPB is a clothing brand for people, by people. There's no red tape here. Our customers have helped build this sandcastle and our customers should be the ones with the shovels shaping our forever-growing sand little fortress.

Stephen Considine is the founder and owner of BPB W alongside some fairly meaningless abbreviations like a BA in Fine Art, bit of Digital Marketing, GOT (season 1 & 2 only) and blessed with the superpowers of ADHD. These, alongside motivated friends and an unhealthy obsession with animals and puns, have amalgamated into BiPolar Bear Wear.

We're here to provide fresh clothing and promote happiness and awareness of not-so-happiness. Using our various talents* for mischief and charm to get shit done. We know from experience where the lines are, and being on the edge is a fun place to be.

We are here to see other people enjoying and taking pride in our clothes, whilst also eliminating some of the stigma that surrounds mental health. So please feel free to tag us on Instagram or use the hashtags on any social media platform #bpbwear #bipolarbearwear

"I knew I wanted to do art but had no experience or entry point, luckily the GSA tutors gave me an opportunity, instilled some belief, and gave me the guidance and tools to create what I had always yearned to; and nearly ten years later I still refer to what I learned in GSA or for the time, space and those thought processes.

I am forever grateful to the tutors and the creative campfire they have created and for sculpting mine and many other's lives."
